Building the Case for Policy Investment in Stroke Care

Access to mechanical thrombectomy remains limited in parts of Australia, despite its proven clinical effectiveness. To strengthen the policy case for wider adoption, Stryker worked with clinicians and researchers to quantify the broader economic impact of expanding access.

Salus Advisory supported the development and publication of a robust economic model, which demonstrated the potential budgetary benefits of investment in stroke intervention. The findings were published in the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology (JMIRO) and presented at a major national conference, becoming a key tool in federal policy engagement.

The Challenge: Quantifying System-Wide Economic Impact

While mechanical thrombectomy’s clinical benefits are well established, its broader impact on health system budgets was less understood. This limited the ability to build a compelling case for government investment.

To influence policy, a credible, data-driven analysis was needed - one that aligned with real-world conditions and could support advocacy at the national level.

Approach: Developing and Leveraging a Rigorous Evidence Base

Working with Stryker’s Strokenomics team and partners from the University of Queensland and Gold Coast University Hospital, Salus Advisory supported:

  • Economic modelling – Estimating the financial impact of broader thrombectomy access within Australia’s health system
  • Peer-reviewed publication – Preparing the findings for publication in JMIRO, a leading international medical journal
  • Conference presentation – Showcasing the model and insights at RANZCR ASM 2023 to build awareness among clinical and policy audiences
  • Advocacy integration – Aligning the evidence with broader policy and stakeholder engagement efforts

The Outcome: A Stronger Policy & Advocacy Position

  • Peer-reviewed evidence – Published in JMIRO, reinforcing credibility and rigour
  • Sector visibility – Presented at a national conference with clinical and policy reach
  • Informed advocacy – Equipped stakeholders with clear, data-led arguments for stroke investment
  • Positioned as a leader – Strengthened Stryker’s reputation in evidence-based advocacy

This work provided a critical evidence base to support more equitable access to stroke care and positioned Stryker as a leader in data-driven health policy engagement.
